How to Sell Your Vehicle For Sale By Owner with a Sure-Fire Attention Getter

Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

Lots of people sell vehicles of all shapes, sizes and specs. To move your sales ad to the top of the interest list, you need an attention getter…something that sets your ad apart from the rest. The overpriced “typo” gets attention even when potential buyers KNOW that price can’t be real. Curiosity just adds another motivation to call about a vehicle of interest anyway. Using this method, at best, you get a lot of attention and inquiry about your ad and sell your vehicle. At worst, you get to answer a burning question for your callers and make them feel good for knowing the answer.

Difficulty: Moderately Challenging

Instructions

1.      Step 1

    Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

Post an ad for your vehicle and pitch your attention getter. In this ad, add three zeros to your selling price. For example, if you plan to sell the vehicle for $6,000, list the price at $6,000,000.

2.      Step 2

    Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

Gauge your potential buyer. When the phone rings or you get an email inquiry, it will either be from someone genuinely interested in the vehicle or someone simply curious about the price. Gauge which caller this is by initial questions and by reactions as you pitch your vehicle.

3.      Step 3

    Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

Answer and sales pitch. Address the attention getter by providing an answer to the outrageous price, and use the initial interest to offer your sales pitch on the vehicle.

Answer the phone or email and explain that the price was a typo and explain the true price. (This addresses the attention getter and curiosity.)

Then immediately move on to explain just why this vehicle is so special. Sing the vehicle’s praises (truthfully). The buyer will check your statements when he sees the vehicle/tests it.

4.      Step 4

    Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

Follow up with an offer of action. After your pitch, offer to meet the potential buyer, and let him see the vehicle.

(The buyer could come to your home, but that could be an issue. Too, agreeing to meet elsewhere socially pressures the potential buyer to show up and show up on time.)

Good meeting spots may include a WalMart parking lot or other store with a large parking lot and security
cameras, your mechanic’s shop, or a mall. Being in an area where faces will be seen, noted and possibly caught on camera prevents a lot of shady situations.

5.      Step 5

    Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

    Complete the sale.

How to get the best price for a new car - 5 Techniques

How to get the best price for a new car - 5 Techniques

At the Dealer

In an ideal situation the dealership should be on your side at finding the right vehicle at the right price. However, some car dealers place more emphasis on profits rather than customer service or satisfaction. When you are buying a new car, keep your interests in front at all times. By avoiding common traps that can cost you extra money you will get the best bang for you buck. Here are five tips to get you on your way to owning the best car for your budget.

Difficulty: Moderate

Instructions

1.      Step 1

Do your Homework: Most dealerships will prey on the unprepared. Going into the showroom "green" – without the requisite facts and pricing data – will give the salesperson much more control over the purchasing process.

You need to thoroughly research your choices. Gather a wide variety of reviews from web sites such as Yahoo Autos!, www.edmonds.com or MSN Auto are great places to start. You want to check the reliability, safety, fuel economy and pricing of any models you are thinking about. Do not put this off until the day you plan to go to the dealer for a test drive.

Research and determine what the trade-in value of your current vehicle is to determine its approximate worth. This will depend on the vehicle's age, condition, mileage, options and other equipment along with where you trade it in.

2.      Step 2

Do not assume that the sticker price is the asking or purchase price. To get the lowest price, start with the cost of the car for the dealer, which can be found on the internet. What you are looking for is referred to as the dealer invoice price. However, this is not necessarily the price that the dealer paid for the vehicle. In most cases there are often behind-the-scenes bonuses, such as dealer incentives and kickbacks, which give dealers a higher profit margin.
You can check the price-quotes on the websites listed below in the resources section for web links. A reasonable price to start negotiations is between 3 to 6 percent over the dealer invoice price or Wholesale Price. If the model is in high demand you may have to start with 8 percent and go from there. Keep in mind you can get a lower price through effective negotiation at the dealership.

3.      Step 3

Negotiate one item at one time. Salespeople often will mix in financing, leasing, and trade-in negotiations together, often asking you to negotiate around a monthly payment figure. This approach will put the power of negotiation into the hands of the dealer. This type of approach will give the dealer more latitude to offer you a favorable number in one area while inflating terms in another.
Make it clear from the get go: You want the best possible markup over your starting price. Mention that you intend to visit other dealerships selling the same vehicle and you intend to buy from the dealer that gives you the best price.
After you have determined and agreed to a price, now is the time to talk about financing, trade-ins or leasing. If you are met with interference you can leave at any time. Sometimes heading for the door is a sure way to jump-start a slow-moving negotiation or bring a lower offer.

4.      Step 4

Have your financing pre-approved in advance. This can be done through banks, credit unions and loan organizations – then compare what the dealer has to offer. We are starting to see more Zero Percent financing on vehicles from the different manufactures. If you do not qualify for the high terms the salesperson may not try to sign you up for a higher interest rate loan. More than likely, even with not-so good credit, you may get better deals elsewhere.

5.      Step 5

Do not pay for extra accoutrements that you may not need. Dealers will often try to lure you into to extra services such as rust-proofing, fabric-protection and paint protection. They may also try to push VIN etching on your windows to deter thieves, it doesn't work. Most of these things to not work anyway – do not get them.
These services and fees are unnecessary. If the items are listed on the bill of sale, cross them off. Most new, modern cars do not have rust problems. You can treat upholstery yourself or get your own paint protection for much less than what the dealer charges. You can also get your own VIN etching kit for anywhere from $25 to $100 and do it yourself.

How to Purchase Auto Parts for Your Vehicle

How to Purchase Auto Parts for Your Vehicle

Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

Car

Many people go into an auto part store to purchase automotive parts for their vehicle and don't have the correct information pertaining to their vehicle. First you need to know the name of the part you want to purchase. Now you need to know the year, make and model of your vehicle. This is very important; you need to know exactly what size engine you have. Many people will say it's a six cylinder. This doesn't work any more; because today they make several six cylinders. So you will need to know exactly which motor you have in your vehicle. Possibly you will need to have the Vin. number from your vehicle. For example if you have a Nissan almost always you will be asked for a Vin. #. Sometimes you will need to know the wheel base and possibly the size tire. My business has experienced this. I will tell you where to find this information.

Difficulty: Moderate

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

·       Year

·       Make

·       Model

·       Engine Size

·       Vin. #

·       Wheel Base

·       Tire size

1.      Step 1

    Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

    Driver's Door Open

First for the year, make and model of your vehicle. You can look on your insurance card for this information. Also open your driver's door and you will find the exact production date on the sticker. On the body of your vehicle you will find make and model. Your Vin # is also on your insurance card. If your insurance card is not available to you at the present time; than look at the windshield. You will find the Vin # in the lower corner on the driver's side of the windshield.

2.      Step 2

    Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

Look Under Car Hood For Engine Size

Now you want the exact engine size of your vehicle. For this you will need to open the hood of the automobile. In most cars today you will find a lever inside the car; on the driver's side. Possibly will say hood release. Pull the lever. Than go to the front of the vehicle and reach under the hood to find a lever and will require you to pull to the right or pull lever upward to release the hood all the way and lift up. Now you are looking for a sticker that is going to tell you the engine size of the vehicle.

3.      Step 3

    Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

Start At Front Tire To Measure Wheel Base

Now if you need to know the wheel base of your vehicle; this information can be found on the inside of the driver's door. If not there than you will need a measuring tape and possibly another person to help hold the measuring tape at one end. You want to measure from front wheel to the rear wheel of the vehicle. From center of hub cap (front wheel) to the center of the hub cap (rear wheel).

4.      Step 4

    Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

    Tire Information

To find your tire size; you need to look at the tire. The size will be on the tire and will look something like this. (example only P185 65R 14)Also if you look on the inside of driver's door you will find this information also.

How to Not Drive In the Snow

How to Not Drive In the Snow

Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

Knowing What Not to Do when Driving in Snow Can Save your Life and Other's!

So it is snowing outside and you may be one of the unlucky one's who have to go to work. Amazingly, living in Virginia would make people think that we have some idea of how to properly drive in such weather. The truth is that people are terrible drivers and literally freak out when there is 1 millimeter of snow on the ground. Here is common sense advice on how NOT to drive in snow and rain.

Difficulty: Easy

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

·       Common Sense

·       Car that has been winterized such as defrosting fluid, heating filter, and good tires.

·       Not your work clothes initially.

·       Ice scraper and gloves.

1.      Step 1

    Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

Please remove snow from all windows and the especially the top of your car!

The first is to not clean your car properly. That means that you will leave snow everywhere and just scrape a little circle on the driver's side so you can see just right in front of you. Do not clean the whole window including the back windows and side mirrors. Best of all though leave all the snow on top of your car so that when you are driving, large amounts of packed snow can fall on other cars and possibly cause them to wreck.

2.      Step 2

    Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

Use caution. Drive slower and do not speed. Speeding will cause you to hit the breaks which can make you slide very easily!

The next thing you want to do in order to cause an accident is to hit the break lots of times and really hard. Don't tap the breaks lightly or try to avoid hitting them at all which is what safe drivers do, you want to make sure to skid past the red light and run into the car in front of you. In addition, go really fast and fly into a ditch.

3.      Step 3

    Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

An SUV does not protect you against bad weather, it will just help you in certain circumstances!

Remember that you own an SUV; therefore, you are KING OF THE ROAD and nothing can stop you. Go ahead and speed, making sure to change lots of lanes which increases your chance of an accident much more likely. Follow other cars very closely and drive aggressively. Hey, it's not your fault other cars did not get anti-lock breaks or 4WD!

4.      Step 4

    Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

This is a serrious matter so please excuse the humor; however, if you focus on what not to do, increase of getting where you need to go!

If you follow these DO NOT's in bad weather, I can almost guarantee that you will increase your chances of possibly killing yourself and other's.

How to Detail Your Car On A Budget

How to Detail Your Car On A Budget

Detail Your Car On A Budget

How many times do we get into our car and think "this is disgusting, I really need to go have this cleaned". But just don't want to shell out the $125+ dollars it costs now to have it done for you. Well here's a simple and economical way to detail your vehicle yourself for only a couple dollars.

Difficulty: Moderate

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

·       bucket

·       dish soap

·       2 cans foaming carpet cleaner from Dollar Store or the Walmart brand

·       hose

·       rags/towels

·       scrub brush

·       vinegar

·       armor all

·       shop vac or other cleaner that is able to suck water

·       car wax

1.      Step 1

    Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

The very first thing you'll need to do is make sure you have all the supplies you need to clean the vehicle. My husband likes to use the foaming carpet cleaner from the dollar store, but if you're like me you can use a more natural cleaner as well. You can mix a cup of vinegar in with your water and add 1/2 cup of borax with it and that cleans really well too. Or melt down in 1 gallon of boiling water 1/3 cup of Fels Naptha soap and add that to another gallon of water to get the carpets really clean too. Another great cleaner for vehicles to get it shiny inside is Armor All which is optional but gives it the extra nice look.

2.      Step 2

    Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

Next you will need to take your bucket and fill it up with lukewarm water and add a splash of dish soap to it. Then take a rag and wash the whole car thoroughly opening the door jams to clean those out as well. Rinse off with hose, and wipe down with a clean towel.

3.      Step 3

    Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

Now you are ready to tackle the inside. Right now is the time you need to sort through any garbage that is left in the vehicle that needs to be discarded or put aside. Toss out any wrappers, coffee cups, old papers, any food laying around from going through the drive-through, clothes that don't belong in there, etc.
    You have the idea!

4.      Step 4

    Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

The fourth thing you want to do is vacuum thoroughly using either a Shop Vac or if you don't own a Shop Vac, your household vacuum should do fine as long as it has a strong suction. Making sure to get into all the crevices as well as under all the seats.

5.      Step 5

    Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

Now it's time to wash the carpets. If you are using the foaming carpet cleaner spray down generously over carpets and seats. For the really bad stains spray another coat. If you are using the borax blend or Fels Naptha now is the time to scrub that in too. Let it set for 20 minutes. Get a lukewarm bucket of water and scrub carpet with damp towel. Repeat step on hard stains.

6.      Step 6

    Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

Now take a dry towel and rub into carpet to dry. Then take Shop Vac and suck any excess water or lint that is left over. If you don't own a Shop Vac you may need to either borrow one, or worst case scenario you may need to rent one. Either way we are still coming out ahead. Repeat steps with clean towels to ensure you have gotten all the dirt out.

7.      Step 7

    Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

Next you will take a wet towel and wipe all vinyl surfaces, dashboard, door panels, back of seats, center console(if you have one),etc. Using a cleaner of your choice to lift soiled areas. Dry with towel.

8.      Step 8

    Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

The next step would be to wipe all vinyl surface with the Armor All. Spray on towel and wipe down really well. Again this is optional but it really does leave it looking awesome!

9.      Step 9

    Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

Now that your all done cleaning the inside it's time to clean the windows inside and out. My cleaner of choice for the windows is part vinegar and water, wiping really good with just an old rag. Don't use paper towels it tends to leave a lot of lint.

10.     Step 10

    Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

The last step to detailing your vehicle is to wax the outside of the car. Follow the directions on your choice of wax, using 1 coat should do.

11.     Step 11

    Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

Now go take your family out to dinner with the money you just saved! Whoo hoo! You'll be a big hero!

How to Save A Lot of Money on Gas

How to Save A Lot of Money on Gas

Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

FOR A CLEANER ENVIRONMENT

This article will show you how to clean your vehicle's fuel injectors quickly.

You'll save money by getting a lot better gas mileage. If you are told you need to replace a fuel injector, try this first and it could very well save you hundreds of dollars on parts and labor to replace a fuel injector.

Difficulty: Easy

Instructions

Things You'll Need:

·       3 to 5 Cans of Carburetor Cleaner

·       1 Bottle of Rubbing Alcohol or Fuel Injector Cleaner

·       1 Flat Head Screwdriver

1.      Step 1

With fuel prices what they are today we need all the help we can get.

Rubbing alcohol costs less than fuel injector cleaner and that is why I use it. It's up to you which one you choose for quality as it is six of one, half a dozen of the other.

Pour the contents of the bottle in your gas tank before filling up at the pump.

2.      Step 2

Return home and open the hood of your vehicle. Locate the air filter. The air filter housing has a hose that leads to the throttle plate. Remove air filter housing and accompanying hose with a flat head screwdriver. This step should take less than 60 seconds.

3.      Step 3

    Start your engine.

4.      Step 4

Spray carburetor cleaner directly into the hole where the air cleaner housing hose was hooked up to the engine.

Once you start spraying the carburetor cleaner you will immediately notice your car running smoother and quieter.

5.      Step 5

Allow your vehicle to idle. If the engine begins to run rough again spray another can of carburetor cleaner.

Repeat until you've used three cans if your vehicle is less than five years old. Five cans will be required if your vehicle is more than five years old.

6.      Step 6

If your engine is still running rough contact a mechanic.

How to Stop Waiting For Your Mechanic To Fix Your Car Or Auto

How to Stop Waiting For Your Mechanic To Fix Your Car Or Auto

Here are few suggestions for you if you have been waiting for your car to be repaired with no results.

Difficulty: Moderately Easy

Instructions

1.      Step 1

If you dropped off your car for repairs, has it been a while since you heard from them?
When you call the company do they give you a date that the car will be ready and then when you call the car isn't ready?
Does the company tell you that they are having trouble finding parts?
Does to company tell you that they are short on help?
Do you feel like you have to nag or "nice" the work out of them? In other words, if you begin to get a little annoyed, then do they tell you that you can take your work elsewhere?

2.      Step 2

If you answered yes to many, all or even one of the questions above then you probably have a mechanic company that takes major repairs on big vehicles first because they mean more money and they put off other peoples car repairs if they are small or they can't charge as much for the repair. So you are stuck in the middle especially if you had to have your smaller car towed or the repair is more minor and the car is not working.

3.      Step 3

The best thing to do in this case is be as nice as possible, but be extremely persistent. When you call ask if your car is fixed yet. Make it the first question. When the company tells you that it is not, then ask what day it will be repaired. Get as specific an answer as possible. Like Tuesday at 2pm. Then tell the company that you will call then to see if it is ready. Make it a point to call at that time and on that date.

4.      Step 4

If the company tells you that the auto is not ready then, as nicely as possible, get another time and date that it will be, and then go to the shop and actually pick up your car. Tell the company that you are there to pick the car up. If it is not fixed, then get another date. Keep embarrassing them and aggravating them with your nice attitude.

5.      Step 5

When you finally get your car and pay for it, then file a complaint with the better business bureau. In the letter describe what you think happened with the company who fixed your car. A lot of people refer to the BBB when they are shopping for a local business. This will help them be aware of the company's business practices.

How to Decode a Tire Identification Number to Determine Tire Age

How to Decode a Tire Identification Number to Determine Tire Age

Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

This tire was manufactured during the 27th week of 2008. (click on the image to enlarge)

Tire age is the most important factor to consider when buying new or used tires. Just because a tire is brand new does not ensure that it is safe to use on a vehicle. As tires age the rubber breaks down and begins to crack, which can result in devastating car wrecks. For optimum safety, do not buy tires manufactured more than six years ago, learn to decode tire identification numbers, and always determine tire age before you buy new tires.

Difficulty: Easy

Instructions

1.      Step 1

Look for the Tire Identification Number branded on the sidewall of the tire to determine the tires age. The Tire Identification Number is preceded by DOT, which stands for Department of Transportation, and is 10 to 12 digits in length. You may have to check both sides of the tire to find the complete Tire Identification Number.

2.      Step 2

Locate the last three or four digits of the Tire Identification Number. Previous to 2000, three digits determined the tire age. Tires made since 2000 use four numbers to determine a tires age.

3.      Step 3

    Since 2000

Determine the year the tire was manufactured by decoding the last two digits. For example, if the last two digits are “07”, then the tire was manufactured in 2007.

4.      Step 4

Determine the week the tire was manufactured by decoding the first two numbers that makeup the last four digits in the Tire Identification Number. For example, if the last four digits of the Tire Identification Number are 2807, then the tire was manufactured during the 28th week of 2007.

5.      Step 5

    Before 2000

Determine the year the tire was manufactured by decoding the last digit of the Tire Identification Number. For example, if the last digit is “3”, then the tire was manufactured during the 3rd year of the decade. The problem with this system was that you could not determine during which decade the tire was made.

6.      Step 6

Determine the week the tire was manufactured by decoding the first two numbers that makeup the last three digits in the Tire Identification Number. For example, if the last three digits of the Tire Identification Number are 403, then the tire was manufactured during the 40th week of 1993 (or 1983).

7.      Step 7

Shop for newly manufactured tires by decoding the Tire Identification Numbers. A good rule of thumb is to purchase tires that are less than six years old for optimum safety.

How To Know When to Buy New Tires

How To Know When to Buy New Tires

Picture (Device Independent Bitmap)

Maintaining your tires is an important aspect of vehicle ownership, and knowing when to buy new tires can be difficult. By learning how to assess the condition of your tires, you will reduce the risk of blowouts, hydroplaning and decreased traction when you are on the road.

Difficulty: Easy

Instructions

1.      Step 1

Examine the tire walls of each tire. They should be free from cracks, bulges and other signs of damage. If the tire wall shows signs of damage, replace the tire or tires immediately. Otherwise, they could blow out while you are driving, posing a safety hazard to you and other drivers.

2.      Step 2

Check all surfaces of each tire for uneven wear. Move the car to check areas that are in contact with the ground for a thorough inspection.

3.      Step 3

Check your tread depth. If you are unsure whether you have enough tread, use a quarter to measure the tread depth. Place the quarter in the tread with George Washington's head upside-down in 3 different locations. Check 1 inch from the inside of the tire, 1 inch from the outside and in the middle of the tread. If all of Washington's head is visible from any of these checkpoints, it is time to replace your tires.

4.      Step 4

Check the treadwear bars that run horizontally across the tire, even if your tires pass the quarter test. If the treadwear bars are flat with surface of your tire, replace your tires.

5.      Step 5

Check your air pressure regularly. If your tires are not maintaining pressure, there is a slow leak in the tire and it needs to be replaced.

6.      Step 6

Buy new tires if your existing ones have been punctured. Some punctures can be repaired with a patch, but in some cases replacement may be a better option.
