: Associated Press; According to a report by WHO, the average life expectancy in India rose to 65 years in 2009 as compared to 57 in 1990.

In 1990, the life expectancy for the average Indian was 57 years. Thankfully, things have changed for the better, according to a report by the World Health Organization, which indicates that the average life expectancy in India rose to 65 years in 2009.

However, this is still three years less than the global average. Japan recorded the highest life expectancy of 81 years and Malawi had the lowest, at 47 years, says the WHO's 2009 Life Expectancy report, released Friday.

In India, the life expectancy of women – 66 years – is three years more than an average male. According to the WHO 2008 Mortality and Burden of diseases report, the biggest cause of mortality in the population aged between 0-5 years in India is poor prenatal care, while for 15-60 year olds, it is non-communicable and malignant diseases.

This highlights the need for better implementation of health care policies in India.

India's neighbor China has a much higher average life expectancy of 74 years, with the average female living to 76 and the average male to 72. Pakistan, however, has a lower life expectancy than India at 64 years. In 1990, the life expectancy of an average Pakistani was two years more than the average Indian. Stanley Ka Dabba is a marvellous debut... Rating: 5/5

In many ways, Amole Gupte's directorial debut plays out like a classic Western. A grumpy old Sheriff, a veritable bloodhound, starts sniffing around as the sun makes its way overhead and sweat starts rolling down his face. The harmonica -- and the uneven twang of a lonely banjo -- here signals his hunger, hunger he attempts to hide from a roomful of varmints by wiping drops of sweat and the beginnings of drool off with the same once-white kerchief. The outlaws -- runts who dutifully call all ladies "ma'am" -- watch him, fascinated and repelled in equal measure, as do we, in extreme close-up. This is tiffin-break as high noon.

Not that Stanley Ka Dabba, the fabulous treat Mr Gupte brings to our quality-hungry cinematic stomachs, is like a cowboy movie, of course. It is a delightfully simple story about a young boy, his friends and a schoolteacher who isn't his greatest fan, and yet, like the finest of children's tales, it has the power to be just as epic as the children want it to be. Amole, clearly a man who enjoys decapitating our existing cynicism and bringing us on par with his wonderful young protagonists, and for this -- and the resultant return to innocence -- we must be very grateful indeed.
Our young hero here is called Stanley, and played as he is by Partho, he's damn near irresistible. A highly imaginative lad with wide-eyed enthusiasm showing off inner gallons of can-do juice, Stanley's slightly broken English straightens itself (like his schoolboy-slouched spine) for the cutesy English teacher he [...]

Jayalalitha The Chief Minister Returns to Office with Gifts for Voters

On Monday, actor turned politician, Jayalalitha was sworn in for her third stint as chief minister of Tamil Nadu since being elected back in 1991. Without wasting any time the AIADMK leader dished out a lot of gifts for the state's female population and for those under the poverty line by ordering for 20 Kg of rice for the poor people of the State and 35 Kg for those who are even poorer. This is to be distributed by the State's public distribution system. The newly instated Jayalalitha the Chief Minister ordered that apart from the aid of Rs. 25,000 for marriage assistance, the poor yet educated women of the State be provided with a 'mangalsutra' made from four grams of pure gold as well. For those women who are educated with a degree or diploma and are yet poor the assistance was doubled to a sum of Rs.50, 000.

She also further hiked the compensation to fishermen during the 45 day period ban on fishing and raised pension rates for destitute, differently disabled and old women to Rs.1000. The maternity leave for women working for the state government was also extended to six months.

Earlier in the day Jayalalitha the Chief Minister was sworn in at the Universary Centenary hall by Governor Surjit Singh Barnala. The oath taking was attended by the likes of Gujarat Chief Minister, Narendra Modi, DMDMK leader A. Vijayakanth, former Andhra Pradesh Chief Minster Chandrababu Naidu and several personalities from the Tamil film industry. Earlier in the elections the AIADMK led coalition won 203 of the 234 seats in the state of which 150 were procured by the AIADMK itself.[...]

Is NASA shuttle launch end of US Space Domination?

What seemed for a long time as a distant possibility for NASA finally seems to have occurred. Monday morning marked the day of the launch of the NASA shuttle endeavor.

The significance of the NASA shuttle launch lay beyond just the fact that it was embarking on a mission to outer space. It marked the penultimate NASA shuttle launch before a period which is roughly going to be known as "The Gap". This is a period of time when no space shuttles will be launched by NASA which means there will be no U.S. led space mission for some time now.

This "Gap" is a result of what Democrat Dutch Ruppersberger says was a lack of prioritization of space programs by previous administrations which resulted in lack of funds in subsequent years. The last NASA shuttle launch is scheduled in early July after which if the U.S. intends to send any astronauts into space over the next couple of years, an approach to Russia would be necessary apart from a price of $62.7 per seat that the U.S. wants to take from Russia. It is believed however that the problem that is "The Gap" would come to an end once a deal from a group of private companies is concretized by NASA according to NASA administrator Charles Bolden.

Either way there seems no scope for any U.S. led missions to outer space well before 2015. Until then the U.S. dominated space exploration sphere will find itself open to conquest by other nations while the U.S. looks for means to come out of this stagnation.
