ED arrests Hasan Ali’s aide Tapuriah

Prominent Kolkata based businessman Kashinath Tapuriah, who is alleged to be an associate of India's biggest tax evader Hasan Ali Khan, was arrested by the Enforcement Directorate on Thursday.

74-year-old Tapuriah is said to be closely associated with Khan and allegedly played a role in the transfer of money to a Swiss bank via Hasan Ali's investments in 14 of his companies.

Tapuriah was arrested here after three days of questioning, ED sources said. He would be produced in court later today.

The ED claims that Tapuriah and his wife, Chandrika, operated a series of overseas bank accounts along with Khan. While Khan has an I-T notice of Rs 50,000 crore; Tapuriah and Chandrika have pending notice of Rs 591 crore and Rs 20,540 crore respectively against them.

As per reports, his name had cropped up in the documents recovered from Khan's Pune residence.

He was earlier also questioned about his links with Khan; his premises in Kolkata were raided too.

Tapuriah, chairperson of RM Investment and Trading Company and is better known as the brother of late Priyamvada Birla and the executioner of her will.

For the record he has been claiming all along that he has no accounts in Swiss banks and that he is a transparent and honest man.

53-year-old Hasan Ali Khan has been arrested by the agency on charges of stashing huge amounts of black money in banks abroad. He is currently out on bail.
