How to Explain the PC Registry

The Windows registry is a large database that keeps your computer running as it should. It contains the settings and configurations for programs, applications and system components. Manual management is difficult but can be helpful because it allows you to search for, modify and delete entries that have been installed by viruses, spyware and malware when registry applications do not detect them. For those who are not skilled for manual management, automatic cleaning is both safe and efficient in repairing missing DLL (Dynamic Library Link) files, ActiveX applications and fixing registry errors.

Manual Management

1.      Step 1

Open the registry by clicking the Windows "Start" button. Click "Run" or "Start Search" (Windows Vista users).

2.      Step 2

Type "regedit" (Without quotes) and press "Enter." That will open your computer's registry.

3.      Step 3

Back up your registry by clicking "My Computer" on the left panel. Click "File" and click "Export." Type in the name for the backup file and click "Save." Before you make changes to the registry, it is always important to create a backup copy that you can come back to in case you make an error.

4.      Step 4

Click the path on the left panel that you want to access to adjust or delete certain registry keys. For example, to modify (adjust) a certain key in the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software" path, you click the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" folder on the left panel and click the "Software" folder. Right-click the key you want to adjust on the right panel and click "Modify." Type in the value data and click "OK" to save the changes. The value data you have to add all varies depending on the programs you have on your computer and which ones are causing problems. Those values will not be the same for every computer user.

5.      Step 5

Most of the registry entries you would want to delete have been added by viruses, spyware and malware. They may vary depending on which of those components are on your computer.
Delete a registry item by clicking on the path you want on the left panel and right-clicking the registry key on the right panel and selecting "Delete." For example, to delete a key in the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE/Software" path, you click the "HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE" folder on the left panel and click "Software." Locate the key you want to delete on the right panel and right-click it. Click "Delete" to remove the registry key.
If you want to search for specific registry entries, press "F3" to open the search window. Type in the name of the registry entry you want to search for and click "Find text." To search for registry entries using "F3" you need to know the name of the registry entry you are looking for.

6.      Step 6

Click "File" and click "Exit" to close the registry.

Automatic Registry Cleaning

7.      Step 1

Download and install CCleaner free (see resources below). CCleaner is an automatic registry cleaner program that removes unnecessary files, and repairs ActiveX and missing DLL files. ActiveX files are Web browser add-on programs that allow you to view videos, photos and download files from different websites. DLL files are support files for many different programs. When they become corrupt, the programs using them do not open properly or crash within minutes of use.

8.      Step 2

Launch your program after it has installed and click the"Registry" button on the left panel. Place a check on all the registry options in the "Registry Integrity" window.

9.      Step 3

Click "Scan for Issues" to automatically search for corrupt registry files. Click "Fix selected issues" when the scan is complete and click "Yes" to backup your registry.

10.     Step 4

Click "Fix all Selected Issues" after you have a created a registry backup and click "OK." CCleaner will remove unnecessary files and repair corrupt and missing ones. Close the program when the process is complete.

I made it! Four months after joining eHow's Writers Compensation Program, I'm bringing in an average of $10 a day. I've been discovering how to fine tune my articles, and steadily increase my earnings. I expect to be well beyond $10/day in another month or so. Here's how to do it.

***Register***

If you haven't already, register at eHow to open up an account and join the Writer's Compensation Program (see resource links, below, for a direct link to more info on registration).

2.      Step 2

***Start producing***

eHow is primarily a site for written content, although you can include images and videos with any How-To articles that you write. So, begin writing! I've included a few links (see Resources, below) to other eHow articles that cover some of the mechanics of how to get started and contribute to eHow. Make sure to look these over, as they are chock full of good advice.

3.      Step 3

***Don't despair!***

With your first few eHow articles, your income stream will start trickling in after a week or so, probably only pennies a day. It may hardly seem worth the effort. However, if you stick with it, the pennies become dimes, then quarters, then dollars. With the effort of only a few months, you can build up to the $5-7/day level, and continue building up after that to get to ten bucks a day (which is $3,650/year...not bad, eh!)

4.      Step 4

***Take the long view***

An article that earns a nickel a day may seem trivial, but it's actually bringing in almost $20 a year. If it keeps producing over the years (and why wouldn't it?), it will bring you $100 in five years time. Not bad for the one or two hours of work you put into creating the article.

***Keep writing***

The secret to eHow is not much of a secret, really. You have to contribute a lot of good-quality articles. I try to post two articles a day, though many of my colleagues are much more prolific. You won't really have a good feel for how eHow works, and what your real earning potential is, until you have gotten through your first hundred articles.

6.      Step 6

***Don't obsess***

Your article results will vary like crazy. Some articles will get hundreds or thousands of views, while others will sit there, read by only a handful of viewers. Some articles will earn you a ton of money, while others earn absolutely nothing.

Craziest of all, you're likely to find that some of your articles with the most views produce the least earnings (or zero earnings!). Don't get stuck agonizing over the reasons why! Move on, write your next article, and your next, and next.

7.      Step 7

***Optimize***

On the other hand, don't ignore your stats either. From your high-earning articles, learn what topics, keywords, and article styles are doing the best for you. From the poor earners, learn what isn't working.

8.      Step 8

***Be Adsense Smart***

Adsense ads are all over the eHow pages...it's the key way they (and you) earn money, every time viewers click on the ads. Make sure your articles and Adsense ads are a good match. If not, tinker with the title and language until they are.

9.      Step 9

***Proselytize***

Get out there, especially with your high-earning articles. Ask your friends and colleagues to visit your eHow articles, and comment on them (include your eHow colleagues as well, and make sure to visit and comment on their articles, too). Submit links to Digg, StumbleUpon, and other social networking sites.

10.     Step 10

***Get Smart***

Visit the resource links directly below to learn more about the ins and outs of making money at eHow. You'll hit ten dollars a day before you know it.

***Six Month Update***

Well, here I am six months after getting started at eHow (and two months after first writing this article), and I'm well past the $20-a-day mark in earnings. How to Use a TV Tuner in Windows

One of the lesser-known add-on cards available for computers is the TV tuner card. A TV tuner allows you to connect a cable or satellite television connection to your computer, enabling you to watch (and generally record) televised video directly on your computer. Installing and using a TV tuner card is generally quite easy, though the exact options that may be available to you can vary depending on the type of TV tuner card that you have and the video or media player that you use to watch your televised video with.

Things You'll Need:

·       Driver installation CD or file

·       Cable or satellite connection

·       Philips screwdriver

1.      Step 1

Shut down your computer and remove the side panel from your case. Locate an empty expansion card slot (they should be at the bottom of your motherboard, near the back of your computer) and remove the corresponding expansion slot cover on your case using your screwdriver.

2.      Step 2

Position the TV tuner card so that it lines up with the expansion card slot that you will be plugging it into. Press down carefully but firmly, making sure that the plug tab on the bottom of the card slides fully into the expansion slot. Use the screw from the expansion slot cover to secure the outer portion of the TV tuner card to the open expansion port on the rear of your computer.

3.      Step 3

Replace the side panel of your computer and boot up your operating system. Windows should prompt you that it has located and is installing new hardware; if it doesn't, open the "Control Panel" option from your Start menu and select the "Install New Hardware" option from the "Hardware and Sound" option. (Please note that these options may have different names depending on the version of Windows being used.)

4.      Step 4

Insert the driver installation CD (or double-click the installation file that you have downloaded) and install the driver software for your TV tuner card. Follow the on-screen prompts to choose an installation location and input any other needed information. Reboot your computer once installation has finished so that Windows will be able to load up the proper drivers to use the TV tuner card.

5.      Step 5

Attach the coaxial cable from your cable line or satellite descrambler to your TV tuner card. If you are wishing to connect the computer to the cable line separately from your televisions, use a coaxial splitter to add a new cable line specifically for your computer.

6.      Step 6

Launch the television-viewing software that came with your TV tuner or your preferred media player that is compatible with the TV tuner that you have chosen. If your computer has Windows Media Center installed, you may also use that to view television channels.

7.      Step 7

Use the channel controls for your software to change channels or go to specific channels. If your TV tuner and viewing software allows for DVR functionality, you can also use the controls to rewind, record, and fast-forward live television (though the fast-forwarding will require a portion of the program to have been recorded already).

How to Use a TV Tuner in Windows
