Fuel Prices Catching Up With Reality?

Monday, May 16, 2011

A little while ago, we asked whether Indian politicians had the courage to raise prices at the fuel pump in response to the country's ballooning crude oil import costs.

Well, it's time to hand out some partial credit. Over the weekend, with state elections in the rearview mirror, state-owned fuel retailers raised petrol prices five rupees per liter.  They've got to do another price increase of the same magnitude to get their balance sheets out of the red, but the government should be commended for taking a necessary and painful step.

No one wants higher fuel prices, especially when food price inflation is causing enough problems as it is. For some, paying more at the pump is an annoying additional crimp on the monthly household budget; for others, it decimates what little disposable income they may have had. That's why people were lining up at petrol stations around New Delhi late Saturday, hours before the rate increase went into effect, to fill up their tanks. And it's why tens of millions of Indians are angry.

But the reality is that the longer India waits to get in line with plus-$100 per barrel global oil prices, the worse the e [...]

Indians Are Living Longer

Associated Press
According to a report by WHO, the average life expectancy in India rose to 65 years in 2009 as compared to 57 in 1990.

In 1990, the life expectancy for the average Indian was 57 years. Thankfully, things have changed for the better, according to a report by the World Health Organization, which indicates that the average life expectancy in India rose to 65 years in 2009.

However, this is still three years less than the global average. Japan recorded the highest life expectancy of 81 years and Malawi had the lowest, at 47 years, says the WHO's 2009 Life Expectancy report, released Friday.

In India, the life expectancy of women – 66 years – is three years more than an average male. According to the WHO 2008 Mortality and Burden of diseases report, the biggest cause of mortality in the population aged between 0-5 years in India is poor prenatal care, while for 15-60 year olds, it is non-communicable and malignant diseases.

This highlights the need for better implementation of health care policies in India.

India's neighbor China has a much higher average life expectancy of 74 years, with the average female living to 76 and the average male to 72. Pakistan, however, has a lower life expectancy than India at 64 years. In 1990, the life expectancy of an average Pakistani was two years more than the average Indian. The average life expectancy in Nepal in 2009 was 70, while for Bangladesh it was 65 and for Sri La [...]
